Mining giant Anglo American says it will start working with the country’s biggest mining companies on a “backfill” project that will remove the dust and dirt that miners often have to dig up.
The company says it hopes to complete the job by the end of the year.
The plan is part of an initiative to help the country get its mining back on track.
The mining industry has been in turmoil for years after a wave of corruption and corruption scandals rocked the region, which has been plagued by decades of corruption.
The mines have also suffered from falling commodity prices and high-level government interference.
